Dropless Cataracts: Making Cataract-Removal Recovery Easier!

Cataract surgery is something that most of us will have to go through at some point in our lives. However, many people avoid cataract surgery. This could be out of fear, or because they just don’t want to deal with the recovery. But what if we told you that recovery after cataract surgery could be made easier than it already is? For those looking to make recovery after cataract surgery simpler, there is a method called dropless cataract surgery.

What is Dropless Cataract Surgery?

During typical cataract surgery, the patient is required to use eye drops both before and after the procedure. These eye drops usually contain antibiotics, as well as anti-inflammatory medicines that are required to avoid infection and quicken healing. However, keeping up with these eye drops can be annoying and not very cost effective.

During dropless cataract surgery, Dr. Whitaker injects a medicine called Tri-Moxi into the eye. This medicine contains the antibiotics and medication that would normally be administered in the eye through the use of eye drops.

How is it performed?

Dropless cataract surgery is performed in the same way as typical cataract surgery. The only difference is that when the cataract is removed, Dr. Whitaker will inject Tri-Moxi into the eye. Tri-Moxi is absorbed by the eye over the next month, completely removing the need for eye drops after cataract surgery.

Are there any side effects?

It is common for patients to see temporary floaters or shadows, owing to where the medicine is placed inside the eye, but they are only temporary. However, it is important to report these to your ophthalmologist immediately. While it is likely they are only a harmless side effect, floaters are a common symptom of retinal detachment. Retinal detachment can cause permanent vision loss and must be dealt with immediately.

While medical drops are usually unnecessary, some patients may benefit from a short course of drops to optimize their recovery.  Patients may use lubrication drops the first few days after surgery to combat any dryness after surgery.
